Web processing with OGC WPS Specification

The Web Processing Service (WPS) has been released recently as an implementation specification by the OGC. It allows to provide and execute geoprocesses through a standardized interface on the Web. This workshop will give an introduction to the specification and provide some examples. The practical part of the workshop will be based on the WPS implementation of 52 North.

Geosensor networks

The number of applications based on Geosensor Networks is steadily increasing. Important use cases comprise a broad range of topics such as early warning systems, health care systems or military systems. The Open Geospatial Consortiumís (OGC) Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) Initiative has defined a framework containing several standards for the interoperable access, description and control of Geosensor Networks in the internet, e.g. the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) for accessing observations and sensor descriptions. Currently, the SWE framework is moving one step forward from science to practical applications.

By presenting a concrete application of the SWE standards the workshop will provide an introduction into the different components of the SWE framework as well as an understanding of their functionalities and interactions.

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) OpenstreetMaps process and prospects (OSM) is a map of the world which anyone can edit where the data is given away freely. Much like wikipedia allows the collaborative creation of an encyclopaedia, OSM allows users to trace aerial imagery or use GPS units to create geometry. That geometry is then "tagged" with key/value pairs such as highway:motorway and name:Baker Street.

Started in August 2004, OSM is now approaching 25,000 users around the world. The majority are in Western Europe and the UK and Germany in particular. OSM is not a complete map, however, mass participation and imports of TIGER (US public domain map dataset) and donated data from AND in the Netherlands have led to the completion of relatively large areas and countries.

This workshop will explore almost every aspect of OSM from data collection to use in a GIS.

Geoprocessing in GRID Computing

Grid computing as a form of distributed system integration has attracted a lot of attention in recent years not only in science but in industry. Grids provide transparent access to high performance computing and establish infrastructures that allows for the creation of on-demand virtual organizations collaborating for a specific business task. Current research efforts in the geospatial domain concern the integration of SDI and grid towards grid-enabled service oriented geoprocessing. This workshop aims to introduce the audience to relevant concepts of grid computing, state of the art, grid architectures and current projects. The theoretical session is complemented by a practical showcase and a final discussion.
